Sparwood, B.C. – Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TECK.A and TECK.B, NYSE: TECK) ("Teck") announced today that commissioning is now underway at its Elkview Saturated Rock Fill (Elkview SRF) expansion, which doubles the water treatment facility's capacity to 20 million litres of water per day.
Elkview is one of the five steelmaking coal operations in the Elk Valley. Teck has a 95 per cent partnership interest in Elkview, 2.5 per cent is held by Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, a Japanese steel producer, and 2.5 per cent is held by POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The latter two companies took control of their interests in 2005.

Teck has developed a new form of water treatment using Saturated Rock Fills (SRF). The first SRF has been commissioned at Teck's Elkview operations and is achieving near complete removal of selenium and nitrate with 95 per cent removal of the substances. The SRF's work by refilling mined out areas with rock which are then flooded with water.
The Elkview SRF was constructed at a total cost of $41 million, and is now exceeding the 7.5 million litres/d capacity of Teck's West Line Creek Active Water Treatment facility, the company said. Teck has recently been working on proving out the SRF results at Elkview with the idea of implementing the technology at other operations.
