If you're looking to hold 0.0004" flatness and paralellism, I doubt a homemade surface grinder will do it. I've seen smaller, bench top models, but haven't worked on any. The ones we have at work are bigger.

Unfortunately I may have to build one because in my area unlike the rest of you used surface grinders go for as much as new chinese ones, ie in the 4-10 thousand dollar range.
