Over the years I have rebuilt several rear differentials, but have never used a pinion depth tool, such as the Professional Ring and Pinion Setup Tool Set that we offer here at Speedway Motors. I've had pretty good results using the contact pattern to adjust the pinion depth, however this time I wanted to see what this tool was all about.
During the ring & pinion installation, there are four pr imary adjustments that will need to be made. 1. Pinion Depth ± The distance from the face of the pinion gear to the centerline of the ring gear. This is adjusted by adding or subtracting shims to the inner pinion bearing. 2.
At this time I'm leaning towards somewhere around 55:1 as being the best overall low range ratio for use in many different situations with 32 - 34 inch dia tyres. Figuring out a differential ratio: If you have an unknown differential sitting in front of you, you can calculate the ring and pinion gear ratio by counting the number of teeth on both the ring gear and the pinion gear.

If this was a leaf spring car, you'd need to change the angle by 7 degrees to get 5 degrees of negative pinion angle. If the rearend is so close to level that you can't tell if its nose up or nose down, put the angle finder on the yoke and then see which direction you have to rotate the finder to make it read zero (or 90 depending on how the angle finder is made).

A commonly overlooked component of a vehicle's drivetrain that has a large effect on fuel economy is rear end gearing. This is the ratio of gears in the rearend (differential) that you may have heard of in the numerical terms 2.73 to one, 3.23 to one, 3.55 to one, 3.73 to one, and 4.10 to one (commonly written in the following manner 3.23:1 with a colon).

To set up the driveline you need to establish the angles for the transmission output shaft, rear end pinion shaft and driveshaft. A good tool for measuring these angles is an inclinometer. They can be obtained quite inexpensively from a local parts store or tool supplier. First measure the …

The noise may change while cornering or turning. • Regular "clunking" or loud "clicking" every few feet may indicate a broken ring or pinion gear tooth. • "Banging, clicking or clunking" while cornering can be caused by broken cornering gears commonly called "spider gears", lack of sufficient positraction lubrication, or worn positraction clutches.

When making pinion position changes, shims should be changed in the range of .002 inch (.05 mm) to .004 inch (.10 mm) until correct pattern has been obtained. When a change is backlash is required, backlash shims should be changed in the range of 1 1/2 times the amount of backlash required to bring the gears into specification.

16-12-2008· The high-pinion design is used so that the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar on these vehicles can run under the front driveshaft. The housing is a unique bolt-together design. The carrier inside is exactly the same as the '86-95 IFS diffs, so LSD's and lockers for it are also the same.
ing with the plunger set perpendicu-lar to the ring gear teeth. While hold-ing the pinion yoke steady, rotate the ring gear back and forth. Backlash will generally change about .007 in. for each .010 in. the carrier is moved. To decrease the backlash, move the carrier closer to the pinion center-line; to increase the backlash, move

Save yourself the headache and let us figure out your ring-and-pinion gear ratio! Select the value you want to solve for. For the Tire field, enter your tire diameter in inches.
Step 2:Choose Pinion Offset. Tip: Select "Use existing housing or axles" to skip pinion offset and build a rearend around your existing parts. Tip #2: A pinion offset of "0" places the pinion in the exact center of the vehicle. A positive offset moves the pinion toward the passenger side. A negative offset moves the pinion toward the driver side.
